Movies to Watch this October

After the hit horror Annabelle and the critically acclaimed Gone Girl, we’re off to a great month for movies. Here are other 10 movies to see this October.

The Trial

Director: Chito Roño
Starring: John Lloyd Cruz, Jessy Mendiola, Richard Gomez, Gretchen Barreto
Showing Oct. 15

If you’re one of those moviegoers who complain about Star Cinema not making enough movies outside the romantic comedy genre, then here’s a local film for you. It’s directed by Chito Roño and stars one of the best actors of his generation, JLD. It does look like Miracle in Cell No. 7 but I’m pretty sure there’ll be more to it.

Director: Damien Chazelle
Starring: Miles Teller, J.K. Simmons
Showing Oct. 15

Just by watching this trailer, how can anyone not watch this Sundance product? J.K Simmons, Tobey Maguire’s boss in Spiderman is intense as ever, and then there are also buzz about Teller’s performance saying that this might be his best acting to date. You’ve seen him in The Spectacular Now, in Divergent, in Rabbit Hole but I think this one is where he’s going to shine. Also, if you’re a music lover or has a band, this is a great movie to watch with your mates.

The Judge

Director: David Dobkin
Starring: Robert Duvall, Robert Downey, Jr.
Showing Oct. 22

Starring two Hollywood Roberts — Duvall and Downey, Jr., there’s no way we should miss The Judge. The catch is, this is actually not an action film. In fact, the trailer implies that it’s going to be very dramatic. We haven’t seen Downey act in a drama for a long time now, and we barely see Duvall in action too. Those reasons alone make us want to watch it when it hits the movies.

Director: Dan Gilroy
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo and Bill Paxton
Showing Oct. 22

Jake Gyllenhaal lose a couple of pounds for his role here in Nightcrawler. That shows commitment right there. And he also has some good reviews from this film. It also looks like another version of American Psycho so if you’re into psychological thrillers, this might be the party for you.

Director: David Ayer
Starring: Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal
Showing Oct. 22

There’s nothing more to say when the cast consists of Pitt, LaBeouf, Lerman, Peña and Shane from The Walking Dead starring in a war film. Must watch.

Director: Alexandre Aja
Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple
Showing Oct. 29

For Harry Potter fans out there! Well, this ain’t about wizardry but Daniel Radcliffe stars in this dark fantasy thriller and from the looks of it, he’s joining the side of Lord Voldemort. I kid, I kid, but look at him trying new things in his career.

Blood Ransom

Director: Francis dela Tore
Starring Anne Curtis
Showing Oct. 29

It’s been years since Anne Curtis advertised this in her Instagram account and now, we’re finally going to be able to see it days before Halloween. Let’s see if Anne’s first Hollywood film would be a hit!

Director: Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes
Starring Judy Ann Santos, Sid Lucero, Solenn Heussaf, Tom Rodriguez
Showing Oct. 29

This Peque Gallaga classic will be remade by Peque Gallaga himself. This time along with his codirector Lore Reyes. If you liked the first Tiyanak, you might like this too as Judy Ann Santos will play the role Janice de Belen brilliantly portrayed in the original. This seems like a perfect film to watch before the Halloween and with Peque Gallaga himself directing, we can only expect that this will be top-notch.

There you have it! Finally a month filled with exciting movies and I’m pretty sure from here to the end of 2014, quality movies will start to pop up!
