A Closer Look At the Pinoy Version of “Into The Woods”

To kick-start the year 2015, Upstart Productions Inc. is set to take on one of the most beloved musicals of all time, Into The Woods.

Now an Oscar nominated film for Best Supporting Actress (Streep), Best Production Design & Best Costume Design, it stars Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Johnny Depp, Chris Pine and Emily Blunt.

The Tony-Award winning Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim (music & lyrics) and James Lapine (book) tells the story of a childless baker and his wife, who set on a journey to end the vengeful curse placed by a witch on their family. Along the way, they bump into several characters from the Brothers Grimm fairy tales and learn the consequences of their wishes and actions.

Last February 3, 2015, Upstart Productions held a press conference at the Picasso Boutique Serviced Residences in Makati City where they introduced the talented ensemble of their own adaptation of “Into The Woods.”

“Into the Woods” stars veteran stage play actors like Noel Trinidad, Rachel Alejandro, Lorenz Martinez, Shiela Valderrama-Martinez, Reb Atadero, Mica Pineda, Onyl Torres and many more. Bloggers and media personnel were treated to a sneak preview of one of the highlights of the show and an exclusive one-on-one interview with the cast.

All the actors were at a consensus that the biggest challenge they had was the music of Sondheim. “The major concern was to master the piece. You don’t want to compromise each and every aspect of the musical as you sing, dance and act at the same time while making sure the emotion is captured,” said Mica Pineda, who will be portraying the role of Cinderella.

“I’ve been in the showbiz industry for a long time now, but this is the first time I felt intimidated,” said Noel Trinidad, star of the hit gag show “Champoy” with the late Subas Herrero. “These people are so talented, I think that I am not at par with them,” he jokingly added.

Musical director and pianist extraordinaire Dingdong Fiel also gave props on how impeccable the cast is during rehearsals. “Let me tell you a secret. These people are so good, they made my job easier as the days passed on. What a talented bunch!”

Even newcomers like Jillain Ita-As, who’ll portray the role of Little Red Riding Hood, did not fail to deliver during the short performance. If what we saw during the teaser was what Onyl Torres, Upstart’s Managing Director and cast member, called “I believe we are at 62% completion.” I can’t imagine how amazing the show would turn out on the premiere itself.

It’s also hard not to notice how everyone in the company felt like a tight-knit family. The boys, especially Reb Atadero, Chino Veguillas and Noel Rayos, were cracking jokes here and there. “One of the challenges is to not have too much fun,” said Jill Peña while laughing.

“I think it’s not an accident. The English-speaking theater community is so small that everyone knows each other. It also makes coming to work something to look forward to. Yes, we may have some minor issues with the technicalities and stuff, but the bond and chemistry is irreplaceable, it would definitely reflect well with the end result,” said Joel Trinidad, director and a well-known playwright and performer.
